What is forex backtesting? Backtesters, trading simulators and chart replay explained
Forex traders use a lot of words for the same idea: backtesting, back testing, chart replay, bar replay, trading simulators, strategy testers, paper trading. Here is what each one means, how they differ, and which one you actually need.
The short answer
Forex backtesting means testing a trading strategy on past market prices before you risk real money. A backtester (or trading simulator) is the app you do it with. “Chart replay” and “bar replay” are what some platforms call stepping through history candle by candle; in PlayBack Forex that is called PlayBack.
Every backtesting term, explained
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Backtesting (also "back testing", "back-testing", "backtest") | Testing a trading strategy on past prices to see how it would have performed. This is the umbrella term; everything below is a way of doing it. |
| Manual backtesting | You watch the chart move forward candle by candle with the future hidden and place each trade yourself. This is how price-action, ICT and SMC traders test, and it is what PlayBack Forex is built for. |
| Automated backtesting | A program (an Expert Advisor, script or bot) applies fixed rules to years of data in seconds. Used for algorithmic strategies; the MT5 Strategy Tester is the common tool. |
| Backtester / backtesting software | Any app that lets you backtest. PlayBack Forex is a manual forex backtester that runs in your browser and on your phone. |
| Trading simulator / forex simulator | An app that simulates trading so you can practise without real money. A simulator that uses historical prices is a backtester. |
| Chart replay / bar replay / market replay | Names other platforms use for stepping through past candles one at a time with the future hidden. In PlayBack Forex this is called PlayBack. |
| Strategy tester | MetaTrader’s name for its backtesting tool, mostly for automated strategies. PlayBack Forex’s report includes every figure a strategy tester shows. |
| Paper trading / practice trading | Placing trades with pretend money. On a backtester you paper trade on past prices; on a demo account you paper trade on today’s live prices. |
| Demo account / demo trading | A practice account at a broker that moves in real time. Good for learning a platform, slow for testing a strategy (see PlayBack vs a demo account). |
| Forward testing | Trading a strategy on new, live prices after backtesting it, usually on a demo or small account, to confirm the results hold up. |
| Historical data / tick data / 1-minute data | The past prices a backtest runs on. Tick data records every price change; 1-minute data records each minute’s open, high, low and close. PlayBack Forex uses 1-minute candles. |
Backtesting vs paper trading vs a demo account
- Backtesting answers “does this strategy work?” using years of past prices, quickly.
- Paper trading is the act of placing pretend trades; you do it while backtesting and on a demo account.
- A demo account answers “can I execute on my broker’s platform?”, in real time only.
The usual order is: backtest first, forward test on a demo or small account second, then trade live.
Manual or automated backtesting: which do you need?
If your strategy needs judgement, such as reading structure, liquidity, order blocks or price action, you need manual backtesting: a chart that hides the future and lets you trade it as it unfolds. If your rules can be written as code, an automated tester such as the MT5 Strategy Tester is faster. Most retail forex traders, and nearly all ICT and SMC traders, need manual backtesting.
What a good forex backtester should have
- Real historical data down to the 1-minute chart, across forex, gold and indices.
- The future hidden, candle by candle, with speed control.
- Realistic orders: stop loss, take profit, pending orders, spread and commission.
- Several timeframes moving together.
- A detailed report: win rate, profit factor, drawdown and more.
- Works on the device you actually use, including your phone.
