How to practise a prop firm challenge before you pay for one

Updated 18 October 2026 · 6 min read

Prop firm challenges are popular in Nigeria: pay a fee, pass a trading test, and trade the firm’s money. Most traders fail, and usually not because their strategy is bad. They fail because they break the daily loss or drawdown rule on one bad day. You can rehearse that pressure on real history before you pay.

The rules that fail most challenges

Every firm is different, so read yours carefully. Typical rules look like this:

RuleTypical value
Profit target (phase 1)8–10%
Profit target (phase 2)4–5%
Maximum daily loss4–5% of the account
Maximum overall drawdown8–10%
Minimum trading daysOften 3–5 days

Notice the trap: a 10% target with a 5% daily limit means one emotional afternoon can end the challenge, even if you were up for the week.

Set up a practice challenge in PlayBack Forex

  1. Open the Trade panel settings (the gear on the account card) and set the balance to your challenge size, for example $10,000.
  2. Set the daily loss limit (for example $500 for 5%) and the maximum drawdown (for example 10%). When a limit is hit, new trades are refused, just like a failed challenge.
  3. Set a realistic spread and commission and the leverage your firm offers.
  4. Pick a starting date you haven’t studied and start a PlayBack.

Rules to practise until they are automatic

How many times to rehearse

Run the practice challenge on at least five different stretches of history: a trending month, a ranging month, a month with big news. If you pass most of them while following your rules, the fee is a smaller gamble. If you fail most of them, you have saved the fee and learned why.

The guide to win rate, profit factor and drawdown explains how to read the results of each attempt.
